Japan Vlog 🍥 Days in Osaka: Eating Too Much, Dotonbori Delights & Sanrio Cuteness!
Konnichiwa, lovelies! Get ready to dive headfirst into a whirlwind of Osaka adventures! I'm so excited to share my recent trip with you – a jam-packed few days filled with delicious food, dazzling sights, and of course, a healthy dose of kawaii culture. Osaka absolutely stole my heart, and I can't wait to take you along for the ride. Think of this as your virtual travel buddy, giving you the inside scoop on everything from must-try street food to the cutest shopping spots. Let's go!
Arriving in Osaka: A Sensory Overload (in the Best Way!)

Stepping off the Shinkansen (bullet train) in Osaka felt like entering a completely different world. Tokyo is sleek and modern, but Osaka? Osaka is vibrant, energetic, and unapologetically itself. The first thing that hits you is the food – the tantalizing aroma of takoyaki and okonomiyaki hangs in the air, practically begging you to indulge. And indulge I did! The streets are alive with neon lights, bustling crowds, and the sounds of street performers. It's a beautiful chaos that I instantly fell in love with.
My first priority, after settling into my (adorable!) Airbnb, was to hit the streets. I chose an Airbnb in the Namba area to be close to all the action.
Dotonbori: Lights, Camera, ACTION! and Food, Food, FOOD!

Oh, Dotonbori. Where do I even begin? This iconic district is the beating heart of Osaka, and it truly comes alive at night. Think of it as a Japanese Times Square, but with significantly more delicious food and slightly less stressful crowds (though still crowded!).
The Glico Running Man: No trip to Dotonbori is complete without a photo with the iconic Glico Running Man sign. It's a classic, a must-do, and a perfect way to capture the energy of the area.
Dotonbori Canal Cruise: I decided to take a Dotonbori Canal Cruise, and I highly recommend it! It's a fun way to see the sights from a different perspective, and the guides are super entertaining (even if my Japanese is still a work in progress!). The illuminated buildings and bustling atmosphere look even more magical from the water.
But let's be honest, the real star of Dotonbori is the food. Here's my personal foodie hit list:
- Takoyaki: This is an absolute must! These crispy octopus balls are a quintessential Osaka street food. I tried several different stalls and they were all amazing, but I particularly loved the ones with a generous amount of bonito flakes and takoyaki sauce.
- Okonomiyaki: Another Osaka specialty! This savory pancake is filled with cabbage, meat, and seafood, and topped with a sweet and savory sauce, mayonnaise, and more bonito flakes. It's incredibly filling and utterly delicious. I suggest getting it cooked fresh right in front of you!
- Kushikatsu: Deep-fried skewers of meat and vegetables. Be sure to follow the golden rule: no double dipping! Each table has a communal pot of dipping sauce, so dip your skewer once and enjoy!
- Ramen: There are countless ramen shops in Dotonbori, each with its own unique style. I tried a few different ones, and they were all incredibly flavorful. I especially enjoyed trying the local Osaka ramen!
- Melon Pan Ice Cream: A warm, sweet melon pan (a type of sweet bread) filled with cold, creamy ice cream. It's the perfect sweet treat to end a long day of exploring.
Seriously, I ate SO much in Dotonbori. No regrets! My waistline might disagree, but my taste buds are singing praises!
Cute Shopping Adventures: From Quirky Finds to Kawaii Overload

Beyond the delicious food, Osaka is also a shopper's paradise. From trendy boutiques to quirky vintage shops, there's something for everyone. I was on a mission to find some unique fashion pieces, cute stationery, and of course, all things Sanrio!
Amerikamura (American Village): This vibrant district is known for its edgy street style, vintage clothing stores, and independent boutiques. It's a great place to find unique fashion pieces and express your individuality. I picked up a super cool vintage denim jacket and a pair of platform boots that I'm obsessed with. Think Harajuku style but with an Osaka twist.
Shinsaibashi: A long, covered shopping street with a mix of department stores, chain stores, and smaller boutiques. It's a great place to find everything from high-end fashion to affordable souvenirs.
Gacha Gacha Heaven: Let's talk GACHA! Osaka has gacha machines EVERYWHERE. These capsule toy machines are addictive! I spent way too much time (and money!) collecting adorable miniature figurines, keychains, and other random trinkets. It's a fun and affordable way to bring home a little piece of Japan.
Den Den Town (Nipponbashi): Known as Osaka's electronics district, but also a great place to find anime and manga goods, and other nerdy treasures. I found some amazing deals on manga and anime merchandise!
Shopping Tips: Don't be afraid to haggle (politely!) at smaller shops. And remember to bring cash! Many smaller shops don't accept credit cards. Also, keep an eye out for tax-free shopping opportunities for tourists.
Sanrio Cafe: A Cuteness Overload!

Okay, prepare for maximum kawaii! I couldn't resist visiting a Sanrio Cafe while in Osaka. It was an explosion of pink, pastels, and adorable character-themed food. I felt like I'd stepped into a real-life Sanrio world!
My Melody Cafe (Located in HEP FIVE): I visited the My Melody Cafe, which was absolutely adorable. Everything from the decor to the food was themed around My Melody. I ordered a My Melody-shaped curry rice and a My Melody parfait. It was almost too cute to eat... almost! The food was actually surprisingly delicious, and the whole experience was just pure joy. It's a perfect spot for anyone who loves Sanrio characters and wants a dose of pure, unadulterated cuteness.
The Experience: Expect to queue, especially during peak hours. It's popular! The atmosphere is fun and lighthearted, and the staff are incredibly friendly. Be sure to take lots of photos! It's a very Instagrammable experience. The themed treats are not only cute but also very creatively designed. The attention to detail is just superb.
Beyond My Melody: Osaka has held different collaborations with Sanrio. Keep an eye on what's current before you visit!
Beyond the Tourist Trail: Exploring Local Gems

While Dotonbori and the Sanrio Cafe are definitely must-sees, I also wanted to explore some of the more local and less touristy areas of Osaka. Here are a few of my favorite discoveries:
Shinsekai: This retro district feels like stepping back in time to the 1950s. It's known for its Tsutenkaku Tower, its cheap and delicious kushikatsu, and its laid-back atmosphere. It's a great place to experience a different side of Osaka.
Osaka Castle: A majestic landmark with a rich history. The castle grounds are beautiful to walk around, and the castle museum offers a fascinating glimpse into Osaka's past. Take some time and enjoy the sprawling beauty. Great for photos!
Kuromon Market: Known as "Osaka's Kitchen," this bustling market is a foodie paradise. You can find everything from fresh seafood and produce to local delicacies and street food. It's a great place to sample a variety of Osaka's culinary delights.
Umeda Sky Building: Offers panoramic views of Osaka from its Floating Garden Observatory. It's a great place to watch the sunset and see the city light up at night.
Hozenji Yokocho Alley: A narrow, atmospheric alley filled with traditional restaurants and bars. It's a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and experience a taste of old-world Osaka.
Practical Tips for Traveling in Osaka:

Before you pack your bags and hop on a plane, here are a few practical tips to help you make the most of your trip to Osaka:
- Learn Basic Japanese Phrases: While many people in tourist areas speak English, knowing a few basic Japanese phrases will go a long way. "Konnichiwa" (hello), "Arigato" (thank you), and "Sumimasen" (excuse me) are a good start.
- Get a Japan Rail Pass: If you're planning on traveling to other parts of Japan, a Japan Rail Pass can save you a lot of money on train fares.
- Carry Cash: Many smaller shops and restaurants don't accept credit cards, so it's always a good idea to carry cash.
- Buy a Suica or Pasmo Card: These rechargeable cards can be used on trains, buses, and even at vending machines. They make getting around Osaka much easier.
- Be Prepared for Crowds: Osaka is a popular tourist destination, so be prepared for crowds, especially during peak season.
- Wear Comfortable Shoes: You'll be doing a lot of walking!
- Stay Hydrated: Especially during the hot summer months. Vending machines are everywhere, so it's easy to grab a drink.
- Respect Local Customs: Remember to remove your shoes before entering someone's home or a traditional Japanese restaurant.
- Have Fun! Osaka is a vibrant and exciting city with so much to offer. Relax, explore, and enjoy yourself!
What I Learned in Osaka: A Few Reflections

My trip to Osaka was more than just a vacation; it was an experience. I learned so much about Japanese culture, food, and design. I was constantly inspired by the city's vibrant energy, its attention to detail, and its unique blend of tradition and modernity.
Embrace the Small Joys: The Japanese culture emphasizes finding joy in the small things, like a perfectly brewed cup of tea or a beautifully packaged sweet. I tried to incorporate this mindset into my own life, and it made a big difference.
The Power of Kawaii: I've always loved kawaii culture, but experiencing it firsthand in Osaka was a whole new level. I realized that kawaii is more than just cuteness; it's a way of bringing joy and happiness into everyday life. From the adorable character goods to the playful designs, kawaii is a powerful force that can brighten even the most mundane of days.
The Importance of Food: Food is such an integral part of Japanese culture. It's not just about sustenance; it's about connection, celebration, and appreciation. I learned to savor every bite and to appreciate the craftsmanship and artistry that goes into Japanese cuisine.
