Greening the inlet: Peak season for harvesting the specialty, Aosanori, in Kita-ku, Mie Prefecture

Table of Contents

The harvest of green algae, which turns the cove green, is at its peak.

In the Hashiura Bay in Kita-Ise Town, Mie Prefecture, the harvest of the local specialty, aosa nori (green laver), is at its peak. The work begins before dawn, as small boats are placed under the nets to cut the nori.

This year, the growth was delayed, so the harvesting work was postponed by about a week compared to last year. Aosa nori is washed at the fishing port and then dried before being shipped.

The harvest lasts until around May.
